There will be a new cancer hospital in the heart of Liverpool (Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool), closer to home for around 63% of patients than the Wirral site.
- Inpatient care (including the Teenage and Young Adult Unit) and a relatively small percentage of outpatient treatments will move from Wirral to the new centre in Liverpool. This is because they are more complex.
- Seriously ill patients will have on-site access to experts in other specialties and intensive care if they need it, rather than having to be transferred to another hospital.
- Cancer experts from different hospitals, the university and key research partners will be together, offering new scope for research. Patients will also be able to access a much broader range of clinical trials.
- For the first time, cancer surgery, chemotherapy and other drug therapies, radiotherapy, inpatient and outpatient care, cancer support and rehabilitation, bone marrow transplant and urgent cancer care will be together on the same site.
- The Wirral site will receive further investment and redevelopment so Wirral and West Cheshire patients can be confident of receiving the same high standard of care and facilities.
